Leland Sandler – San Diego Opera
Leland Sandler, managing partner and executive advisor at The Sandler Group, has been lending a hand to the San Diego Opera, pro bono. Mr. Sandler has 30 years of experience in the education and executive coaching, and for the past two years, he has transformed the opera house through establishing a workplace culture based on honesty, open communication and teamwork.
“We truly think and work together as a team now, and that’s something that I could not have said before working with Leland,” said David Bennett, General Director of the San Diego Opera.
“Because of Leland’s work, staff meetings are shorter, more efficient and results-oriented, and individuals across functions are performing at a higher level.”
The scope of Sandler’s work includes the establishment of individual growth goals and metrics to ensure effective operation of business. Also, his guidance through one-on-one coaching with a focus on personal growth have increased overall productivity. Most importantly, by providing an objective, external perspective, Sandler has helped each staff member identify behaviors that stand in the way of business growth and the constructive feedback on his part has allowed employees across various departments to flourish.
Since January 2016, the opera’s executives have been collaborating with Sandler to learn how to best work together as a cohesive team to meet corporate objectives. The marketing department is now more goal-orientated and communicate clearly and effectively as a unit.

Since its founding in 1950, the San Diego Opera has become an integral part of the national and San Diego arts community. Partnering with Sandler has allowed the abilities of this historic institution to expand beyond the arts and into an effective business administration.
“The work he’s done with San Diego Opera has resulted in an understanding by all of our staff of the importance of open and authentic communication to our future success,” Bennett said.
